Watson Boulevard

From Pittsburgh Streets
Not to be confused with Watson Street.
Watson Boulevard
Neighborhood Perry North
Origin of name Samuel Watson, or the Watson family in general
Watsonia Boulevard (1910–1915)
Origin of name Modification of the name Watson

Watson Boulevard was originally laid out in 1888 in the Watson Place plan of lots by Samuel Watson.[1][2] A revised plan of Watson Place, laid out by the Watson Land and Improvement Company in 1894, established the modern course of Watson Boulevard.[3]

The Watson family were early settlers in this area: the house of J. Watson is shown here on the Perrysville Plank Road in maps of Allegheny County from 1851 and 1862.[4][5]

After Allegheny City was annexed by Pittsburgh in 1907,[6] there were many duplicate street names in the consolidated city. The name Watson Boulevard was apparently felt to be too similar to that of Watson Street on the Bluff, so in 1910 it was renamed Watsonia Boulevard.[7] This name change was undone in 1915.[8]
