This alley was laid out as Violet Alley in the 1905 Brookline plan.[1]
West Liberty Borough, including the northwest half of modern Brookline, was annexed by Pittsburgh in 1908.[2] The following year, many streets in the former borough were renamed to fix duplicates. There was already a Violet Alley in West End (today Violet Way), so this alley in Brookline was renamed Verbena Alley.[3]
Verbena Alley became Verbena Way in 1914, when a city ordinance changed all alleys in Pittsburgh to ways.[4]
