Verdant Alley (until 1914)

This alley was laid out in 1871 in a plan of lots by E. P. Jones and Charles Jeremy, though that plan did not give it a name.[1] It was named Verdant Alley by a city ordinance in 1881.[2] It became Verdant Way in 1914, when another ordinance changed all alleys in Pittsburgh to ways.[3]

In a 1929 column in the Pittsburgh Press, Frank C. Harper, writing about a letter sent to him by John Ihlder, executive director of the Pittsburgh Housing Association, used Verdant Way as an example of a name that recalled an earlier time in Pittsburgh's history: "For there is no buttercup now on Buttercup way and Verdant way long ago ceased to be verdant."[4]
