Uvilla Street

From Pittsburgh Streets
Uvilla Street
Neighborhood Elliott
Union Avenue (until 1905)

This street was originally named Union Avenue. It appears in an 1865 plan of lots by C. Hanson Love[1] and a plan of lots by B. F. and Annie C. Fox, recorded in 1868.[2]

In 1881, a Pittsburgh city ordinance officially established the names of all streets in the city, changing many of them to fix duplicates. There was a Union Street downtown (today Graeme Street), so this ordinance renamed eight other streets and alleys named Union, including this one, to which it bestowed the name Uranus Street.[3] But this street was outside the city limits of Pittsburgh at the time! So this name change had no actual effect.

The Borough of Elliott was annexed by Pittsburgh at the beginning of 1905,[4] and four months later the naming conflict with Union Street downtown was again resolved, this time by changing the name of this street to Uvilla Street.[5]
