Shamokin Street

From Pittsburgh Streets
Shamokin Street
Neighborhood South Side Slopes
Origin of name Native American village of Shamokin
Summit Street (until 1881)

This street was laid out as Summit Street in 1873 in a plan of lots by Oliveretta Wharton and E. M. Yard.[1]

In 1881, many Pittsburgh streets were renamed to fix duplicates. Pittsburgh had four Summit Streets, so this one in the South Side Slopes was changed to Shamokin Street.[2] The name commemorates the Native American village of Shamokin on the Susquehanna River, at the site of modern Sunbury, Pennsylvania.[3][4]
