Shelby Street (until 1910)

This street was laid out as Shelby Street in a plan of lots by John Keating.[1] It appears in the 1852 map of R. E. McGowin.[2]

Allegheny City was annexed by Pittsburgh in 1907.[3] In 1910, over 900 streets in the consolidated city were renamed to fix duplicates. Shelby Street on the Hill conflicted with Shelby Street in Marshall-Shadeland, so it was renamed Seal Street.[4]

Seal Street was officially vacated by a city ordinance in 2002,[5] though there are still street signs for it.
