Cambridge Avenue (until 1927)

Shadyhill Road (1927–1945)
Rosewick Street (1945)
Shadyhill Road (1945–1946)

This street appears as Cambridge Avenue in the 1905 Hopkins atlas as part of the Westwood Plan,[1] laid out by Clifford B. Harmon.[2][3] It was named for Cambridge University. Nearly all of the avenues in this plan were originally named for colleges and universities;[4] in addition to Cambridge Avenue, the plan included the following:[1]

In 1927, after the annexation of Westwood into the city of Pittsburgh, Cambridge Avenue was made part of Shadyhill Road.[5][6]

In 1945 and 1946, a rapid and confusing sequence of street name changes took place. First, in May 1945, the southern end of Shadyhill Road was redirected to the west (to its current route), and this street (the old southern part, the original Cambridge Avenue) was renamed Rosewick Street.[7] Then in October 1945 the rerouting of Shadyhill Road was undone, so this street became part of Shadyhill Road again.[8] Finally, in August 1946, Shadyhill Road was rerouted to the west again, and this street was renamed Elmdale Road.[9]

The name Elmdale was one of a number of candidates suggested by the Public Works Department; the others were Westcrest, Moorhaven, Fieldstone, Elmgrove, Limestone, Locustmere, and the former name Rosewick.[10][11][12] Elmdale was chosen by Thomas E. Kilgallen, president of City Council and member of the Public Service and Surveys Committee.[12][13]
