This alley, from Suncrest Street to Grimes Avenue, was laid out as Salem Alley in 1898 in a plan of lots by the Knoxville Land Improvement Company.[1]

One of the last acts of the Town Council of the Borough of Knoxville, on December 21, 1926, was to rename many of the borough's streets in anticipation of its annexation by Pittsburgh. Salem Alley was going to conflict with Salem Way in Shadyside, so it was renamed Starling Way.[2] The new name was part of a series of alleys named for birds: others were changed to Albatross Way (today Onyx Way), Dove Way, Grouse Way (today Romeyn Way), Hawk Way, Ibis Way, Partridge Way, Penguin Way (today Duart Way), and Swallow Way. This theme had been established earlier: Knoxville had already had a Lark Way and a Wren Way (renamed Lotts Way and Wattle Way).[2]

Pittsburgh annexed Knoxville on January 3, 1927,[3] and in March of that year a Pittsburgh city ordinance changed Starling Way to Marland Way to fix the duplication with Starling Way in Point Breeze North and to match the name of Marland Street across Grimes Avenue.[4]
