Reifer Street (until 1909)
Origin of name Henry Reifer

This street was laid out in 1889 in a plan of lots by Henry Reifer, Peter Schiehl, and Lambert Schuchert as Reifer Street (spelled Riefer in the plan). It was named for the first of these men, whose name was spelled both Reifer and Riefer in the plan.[1]

The name came to be written with a spurious T at the end of the name soon afterward: for example, the 1896 Hopkins atlas writes it as "Riefert St." (even though it has Reifer in the name of the plan).[2]

West Liberty Borough was annexed by Pittsburgh in 1908.[3] The spelling Reifert Street, with E before I and a final T, was officially established by a Pittsburgh city ordinance the following year.[4]
