Loretto Street (until 1910)

This street appears, unlabeled, in the 1882 Hopkins atlas;[1] it was officially named Loretto Street (ending with O) by a city ordinance in 1881.[2] It was often misspelled Loretta (with an A), including in city ordinances.[3] This spelling, Loretta Street, was made official by another ordinance in 1910 that established the names of all streets in Pittsburgh.[4] The spelling change was probably unintentional, or it was not realized that the official name was previously Loretto, because the preceding ordinance, which listed the name changes being made, did not mention it.[5]

Both spellings, Loretta and Loretto, continued to be commonly used for the street. When a western extension was laid out in the Bigelow Heights plan, it was named Loretto Road, using the original O spelling.[6][7]
