Garretta Avenue

Neighborhood | Squirrel Hill South |
Fate | Vacated in 1964 |
Garretta Avenue formerly ran south from Old Browns Hill Road to Steelview Avenue.[1] It was first laid out in 1925 in a plan of lots by T. J. Ingram;[2] he revised this plan in 1929.[3] A city ordinance in 1930 officially approved the 1929 plan, accepted the dedication of its streets, and opened and named the streets, including Garretta Avenue.[4]
Garretta Avenue was vacated by a city ordinance in 1964.[5]
Today there is a street sign on Old Browns Hill Road that says "Garetta St" (with one R, and "St" instead of "Ave"). This marks a private driveway, not a public street; it is not even shown on the city's street ownership map.[6] Two plans of Riverview Towers show that this driveway runs along the course of old Garretta Avenue, but these plans make it clear that Garretta Avenue was vacated in 1964 and the current driveway is not the same street.[7][8]
