The district around this alley was laid out in lots in 1870 by Joseph Patterson. That plan does not appear to include this alley,[1] but it existed by 1872, though without a name.[2] It was named Essex Alley by a city ordinance in 1881.[3] It became Essex Way in 1914, when another ordinance changed all alleys in Pittsburgh to ways.[4]
