This alley was laid out as Clyde Alley in 1893 in the Viewland plan of lots by James D. Callery.[1]

Clyde Alley was renamed Crystal Alley by a city ordinance in 1901,[2] and this name was confirmed in a 1910 ordinance establishing the names of all thoroughfares in Pittsburgh.[3] However, for some reason in 1914 it was felt necessary to change Clyde Alley to Crystal Alley again.[4]

It became Crystal Way later in 1914, when another ordinance changed all alleys in Pittsburgh to ways.[5]
