Clarren Way

From Pittsburgh Streets
Clarren Way
Neighborhood Bon Air
Origin of name Christ Claeren
Clarren Alley (until 1914)
Origin of name Christ Claeren

Old maps show an alley running south from what is today the intersection of Duart Avenue and Bon Air Avenue. This alley was laid out as Clarren Alley in 1889 in a plan of lots by Christ Claeren, Theodore Beach, and John Wirth; it was named for the first of these men, with a spelling change.[1] It appears in the 1896, 1905, and 1910 Hopkins atlases, though they spell the name Claren, with one R.[2][3][4]

West Liberty Borough was annexed by Pittsburgh in 1908,[5] but Pittsburgh seems to have missed the existence of this alley. It is not mentioned in a 1909 Pittsburgh city ordinance that established the names of streets and alleys in the former West Liberty Borough,[6] nor is it listed in another ordinance the following year that established the names of all thoroughfares in the city.[7]

Clarren Alley became Clarren Way automatically in 1914, when an ordinance changed all alleys in Pittsburgh to ways.[8]

A 1952 City Council resolution mentions "Clarren avenue" in the description of a piece of property;[9] "avenue" here must be a mistake. A similar resolution in 1961, describing the same property, mentions "Clarren Way."[10]

Clarren Way appears in a 1980 plan of lots laid out for Joseph S. and Josephine M. Rago.[11]

Clarren Way does not exist today. It may have never existed except on paper.
