This alley was laid out in 1849 in a plan of lots by Reis and Berger, though that plan did not give it a name.[1] It was named Clay Alley by 1872.[2]
In 1881, a city ordinance renamed many streets and alleys to fix duplicates. There was another Clay Alley in the Lower Hill District (later Clay Way), so this alley in the Middle Hill was changed to Caramel Alley.[3]
Caramel Alley became Caramel Way in 1914, when another ordinance changed all alleys in Pittsburgh to ways.[4]
