This alley was laid out as E Alley in 1891 in the Sheraden Terrace plan, which lettered its parallel alleys from A to G.[1]
When Sheraden Borough was annexed by Pittsburgh in 1907,[2] city officials apparently believed that these alleys were unnamed, so this alley was named Brooch Alley the following year.[3] It became Brooch Way in 1914, when a city ordinance changed all alleys in Pittsburgh to ways.[4]
