This alley appears, unlabeled, in maps dating back to the 1850s.[1][2][3] It was originally named Bindley Alley.[4] The portion of the alley north of Pike Street (today Smallman Street) was vacated in 1898 for the Pennsylvania Railroad.[5][6] The remaining part, from Pike Street to Mulberry Alley, was renamed Belvit Alley in 1911.[7] It became Belvit Way in 1914 when a city ordinance changed all alleys in Pittsburgh to ways.[8]
