This alley appears, unlabeled, in the 1872 Hopkins atlas[1] and in an 1883 plan of the Hoeveler estate.[2] It was named Austin Alley by a city ordinance in 1881.[3] It became Austin Way in 1914, when another ordinance changed all alleys in Pittsburgh to ways.[4]
In 1925, over 100 streets and alleys were renamed by request of the post office in order to fix duplications with streets in surrounding boroughs and townships; Austin Way was renamed Cruger Way.[5][6][7]
