This street was laid out as Schiehl Street in 1889 in a plan of lots by Henry Reifer, Peter Schiehl, and Lambert Schuchert; it was named for the second of these men.[1]

The name soon came to be misspelled as Schield Street.[2][3]

It was renamed Abner Avenue by a West Liberty Borough ordinance in 1907.[4] West Liberty Borough was annexed by Pittsburgh in 1908,[5] and the following year a Pittsburgh city ordinance confirmed the name Abner Avenue.[6]
