In 1911, the downtown end of Grant Boulevard (as Bigelow Boulevard was then named) was extended from Seventh Avenue to the intersection of Webster Avenue, Tunnel Street and Pentland Street.[1] This created a pentagonal square where all these streets came together.[2] This square was named Gazette Square in 1914,[3] named for the Pittsburgh Gazette Times, whose building (shared with the Pittsburgh Chronicle Telegraph) was located there.[2]
In 1927, the Gazette Times was merged with the Pittsburgh Post to form the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, and the Chronicle Telegraph was merged with the Pittsburgh Sun to form the Pittsburgh Sun-Telegraph.[4][5][6]
Gazette Square was renamed Telegraph Square by a city ordinance in 1930[7] for the Sun-Telegraph.[8]
The Post-Gazette purchased the Sun-Telegraph in 1960,[9][10][11] and later that year Telegraph Square was changed back to Gazette Square.[12]
Gazette Square was vacated in 1966.[13]
