This alley runs north from Graib Street west of and parallel to Compromise Street. It appears as Quarry Alley in the 1890 Hopkins atlas;[1] the name seems to have been transferred from Compromise Street, which was formerly Quarry Street.
In 1910, three years after the annexation of Allegheny into the city of Pittsburgh, over 900 streets were renamed to fix duplicates. Quarry Alley was renamed Quell Alley (and Quell Street farther north, where it ran between Henderson Street and Compromise Street to meet Sprain Street).[2] It became Quell Way in 1914 when an ordinance changed all alleys in the city to ways.[3]
Bob Regan includes "Quell" in his "Streets of Pittsburgh" crossword puzzle, clued as "To squelch: suppress or crush completely."[4] Unfortunately this is only a dictionary definition of the word quell and does not give any information about the origin of the name.
