Pawpaw Alley (until 1914)
Origin of name Pawpaw tree

This alley was laid out as Paw-Paw Alley in 1887 in the Mansion House plan.[1] This likely refers to the pawpaw, Asimina triloba, a fruit-bearing tree native to southwestern Pennsylvania.[2][3]

The name was officially established as Pawpaw Alley, with no hyphen, by a city ordinance in 1910.[4] It became Pawpaw Way in 1914, when another ordinance changed all alleys in Pittsburgh to ways.[5]
