This alley appears as Pine Alley in the 1872 Hopkins atlas.[1] It was renamed Panama Alley in 1881.[2] The name was perhaps inspired by the French attempt to build the Panama Canal, which had begun at the start of that year. The alley became Panama Way in 1914 when an ordinance changed all alleys in the city to ways.[3]
Bob Regan includes "Panama" in a list of streets named for countries.[4]
