Origin of name The oriole

This alley was first laid out as Oriole Alley in 1890 in Charles Patterson's Vista plan of lots.[1] It was probably named for the oriole, any of a number of species of birds. It became Oriole Way in 1914, when a city ordinance changed all alleys in Pittsburgh to ways.[2]

Oriole Way was renamed Oil Way by a city ordinance in 1955 so that the name Oriole could be given to Hillsview Street in Banksville, which became Oriole Drive.[3] The name Oil is probably just a modification of Oriole.
