M., on the premises, a lot of land, 30 by 100 ft., with a two story dwelling house, situated on Gum street, being lot No. 5, of Whiteside's plan: attached to the house is a good well of water, &c., &c. Any person wishing to see the property will please call on Thomas Jones, near the premises. Sale positive. Terms Cash. ¶ JOHN M'FADEN, Auct'r. ¶ jan 25"
1847-07-26: Source:Digest-1849, p. 286: "AN ORDINANCE ¶ Establishing and fixing the grade of Cliff street in the seventh ward. ¶ Section I. That the grade of Cliff street shall rise from the grade of Fulton street 4½° or 8.31-100 feet per 100 feet to a point 355 feet from the curb line of Fulton street, thence rise 2° 8½′ or 3.74-100 feet per 100 feet to Gum street, or about four feet below the present surface at Gum street, thence descend 29′ or 0.83-100 feet per 100 feet to Cassat street nine feet above the present surface, and from thence rise 2° 42′ or 4.71-100 feet per 100 feet to a point 116 feet from Cassat street, thence rise 5½° or 9.63-100 feet per 100 feet to Ledlie street, ten feet below the surface. ¶ Ordained and Enacted into a law in Councils, this 26th day of July, A. D. 1847. ¶ Recorded—August 3d, A. D. 1847, in Book A., p. 388."

Loomis, of, in and to all those certain three lots or pieces of ground, situate in the sixth ward of the city of Pittsburgh, marked and numbered twenty eight, twenty nine and thirty in Cook and Cassat's plan of lots, recorded in Allegheny county in Deed Book vol. 49 page 19, said lots Nos. 28 and 29 having each a front on Cliff street of twenty four feet by one hundred and twenty two fet in depth and said lot No 30 having a front on Cliff street of 27 feet and extending back, preserving same width one hundred and twenty two feet, along a forty feet street, formerly called "Mac Shane" street, but is now known as "Gum street."

Also—All those certain three lots or pieces of ground situated in the Sixth Ward of the city of Pittsburgh, marked and numbered 28, 29 and 30, in Cook and Cassatt's plan of lots recorded in Allegheny county, in Deed Book, vol. 49, page 19; said lots No. 28 and 29 having each a front on Cliff street of 24 feet, by 122 feet in depth, and said lot No. 30, having in front on Cliff street of 27 feet, and extending back, preserving the same width, 122 feet along a 40 feet street, formerly called Macshane street, but is now known as Gum street, together with all the ground lying between the said lots No. 28, 29, and 30 and lots No. 73, 74, and 75 in Cook and Cassatt's plan which was formerly a part of Catharine street in said plan, and which has been vacated by deed recorded in Deed Book L, page 20, said slip of ground having a width of 50 feet on Gum street and extending back, preserving the same width parallel with Cliff street 75 feet.

1891-03-15: Source:Kaufmann: "But two animals are on the list, the Fox and Fawn; one fish, Halibut; two jewels, the Diamond and Garnet. The Second ward tries to act as sour as possible by having a Lemon alley, but the Thirty-fifth ward goes it one better with a Lime street. Another ward has a Gum street."

1900-12-30: Source:History-recorded: "The late war with Spain is already in evidence in the selection of names. Dewey lane runs from Beechwood avenue to Reynolds street. There is an El Caney alley, while Manila is a new thoroughfare running between Webster avenue and Cliff street."
