Mahogany Alley (until 1896)
State Street (1896–1910)
State Alley (1910–1914)

This alley was laid out in a plan of lots by Joseph Patterson recorded in 1870, though that plan did not give it a name.[1] It appears in the 1872 Hopkins atlas.[2] It was named Mahogany Alley by a city ordinance in 1881.[3] It was changed to State Street by another ordinance in 1896.[4] In 1910, an ordinance that officially established the names of all thoroughfares in Pittsburgh renamed it State Alley.[5] It became State Way in 1914, when all alleys in Pittsburgh were changed to ways.[6]
