This alley was laid out as Lawrence Alley in 1885 in a plan of lots by B. Wolff, Jr.[1] It was renamed Lemon Alley by an Allegheny city ordinance in 1896.[2]
Allegheny City was annexed by Pittsburgh in 1907.[3] In 1910, over 900 streets were renamed to fix duplicates; since Pittsburgh already had a Lemon Alley downtown (today Lemon Way), the Lemon Alley in old Allegheny was renamed Lieb Alley.[4] It became Lieb Way in 1914, when another ordinance changed all alleys in Pittsburgh to ways.[5]
