This alley was laid out in 1870 in a subdivision of the Irwin estate for G. S. Bates, though that plan did not give it a name.[1] It was first named Hatfield Alley, but was changed to Holly Alley in 1881 to fix the duplication with nearby Hatfield Street.[2] It became Holly Way in 1914 when a city ordinance changed all alleys in Pittsburgh to ways.[3]
