This alley was laid out as Geyer Alley (or Geyers Alley) in a plan of lots by Thomas Barnett and Jacob Geyer, recorded in 1834.[1]
Allegheny City was annexed by Pittsburgh in 1907.[2] In 1910, a Pittsburgh city ordinance renamed many streets and alleys in the enlarged city to fix duplicates. Geyer Alley was renamed Gentry Alley to avoid confusion with Geyer Avenue in Marshall-Shadeland.[3]
Gentry Alley became Gentry Way in 1914, when another ordinance changed all alleys in Pittsburgh to ways.[4]
