This alley was laid out as Freeman Alley in 1891 in the Dean Park plan of lots by E. W. Dean.[1] It was named for Sarah A. Freeman, who owned land on the north side of the alley.[2] It became Freeman Way in 1914, when a city ordinance changed all alleys in Pittsburgh to ways.[3]
