This avenue was originally laid out in 1900 as Erny Avenue (or Erney Avenue) in the Bon-Air and Bandi Farm plans of lots.[1][2]

At some point it was renamed Conniston Avenue. Many surrounding streets were renamed by a West Liberty Borough ordinance in 1907, but that ordinance does not list this avenue.[3] Perhaps this ordinance was intended to include the renaming of this avenue too, but the line was unintentionally omitted from the final ordinance.

West Liberty Borough was annexed by Pittsburgh in 1908.[4] In 1909 a Pittsburgh city ordinance changed Conniston Avenue to Camargo Avenue.[5] This name was apparently unpopular, because it was changed back to Conniston Avenue in 1911.[6]
