Burchfield Avenue was first laid out in 1893 in the Midway plan by J. C. Aufhammer and S. J. Macfarren.[1] It was extended eastward in 1901 in the Squirrel Hill plan.[2]

In 1917, George T. Fleming wrote a newspaper column including a few paragraphs about burials in the graveyard at the Mary S. Brown Memorial Church. He wrote, "Adam Burchfield died in 1826, aged 64. We have Burchfield avenue from this family name."[3]
