"Sixty-two new streets: That number opened in the last year in Pittsburgh and Allegheny." Pittsburgh Commercial Gazette, Apr. 26, 1893, p. 2. Newspapers.com 85558882.
The lists of streets for the two cities as they will appear in the new city directory were placed in the hands of the printers yesterday. The lists show a larger number of new streets, avenues and alleys than that of any previous year for some time, the number being 47 for Pittsburgh and 15 for Allegheny. This makes a total of 1,078 streets, alleys and avenues in Pittsburgh, and there is not a duplicate street in Pittsburgh which is in contrast with Allegheny, which with the new list will have a total of 860 streets, alleys and avenues, and will remain as complicated in the matter of doubling up on street names as ever.
The street directory of Allegheny often gives to the uninitiated a poor idea of where he wishes to go, as he is likely to find the name of the desired street in several localities. For example, there is Ann street in the First ward and Ann street in the Thirteenth ward, Bluff street in the Twelfth ward and the Eleventh ward, Center street in the Tenth ward and the Third ward, Clyde in the Tenth and Twelfth and many other examples of like character may be found.
Last year Mr. Diffenbacher sent a communication to the councils of Allegheny asking them to take action on the matter of duplicate streets, but further then [sic] appointing a committee nothing has been done.
The property-owners in the Second ward have protested against the name of Beech street and as a result it hereafter will be known as Beech avenue. This change was made necessary by the fact that there was another Beech street in the Eleventh ward and a Beech alley in the Fourth ward, all tending to cause delay in delivering mail.
