Neighborhood Squirrel Hill North
Origin of name Arthur Hamerschlag
Roberts Drive (until 2015)
Origin of name George A. Roberts

This roadway on the campus of Carnegie Mellon University, which runs between Hamerschlag Hall and Roberts Hall, was formerly named Roberts Drive for Dr. George A. Roberts, a student at the Carnegie Institute of Technology (today CMU) from 1937 to 1942, earning a Ph.D. in metallurgy. He later became the president of the Vanadium Alloys Steel Company.[1] The drive was named either for Dr. Roberts directly or for Roberts Hall, which is named for Dr. Roberts.[2]

Roberts Drive was renamed Hamerschlag Drive in 2015.[3] Arthur Hamerschlag (1872–1927) was the first president (1903–1922) of the Carnegie Technical Schools, later the Carnegie Institute of Technology and today Carnegie Mellon University. As in the case of Roberts Drive, Hamerschlag Drive is named either for Arthur Hamerschlag directly or for Hamerschlag Hall.
