This alley was laid out as Spruce Alley by Benjamin McLain and Thomas S. Maple in their first plan of Beltzhoover, recorded in 1874.[1] It was renamed Palmetto Alley by a Pittsburgh city ordinance in 1898 to fix the duplication with Spruce Alley in Lower Lawrenceville and the Strip District (today Spruce Way).[2] It became Palmetto Way in 1914 when another ordinance changed all alleys in the city to ways.[3]
