"Common Council concurs," Pittsburg Dispatch, 1890-03-22, p. 9, Newspapers.com 76219553: "The final passage of the ordinance changing the name of Roup street to Negley avenue was opposed by Mr. Carnahan, who said the street had been named after the owners of the vast tract of land through which it passes, and he thought it wrong to change the name to suit the fancy of certain persons, who simply wanted Negley avenue lengthened in name."

Source:Miller@33: "In this neighborhood the names Roup, Baum, and Mellon recall the districts known in early days as Baum's Grove and Winebiddle's Woods—the scenes of well remembered camp meetings. These names represent the ramifications of a vigorous and well-developed 'family tree.'"
