2000-03-06: Source:Lowry-push: "When Forbes Terrace opened in 1915, it was advertised in the Pittsburgh Gazette-Times as offering 'The most modern up-to-date houses in the city—7 rooms and 2 baths each; artistically decorated. All rooms are of the livable size. The houses all face on a beautiful Private park.' ¶ Built on sloping land near the intersection of Forbes and Murray avenues, Forbes Terrace was a desirable address in its day, . . . . ¶ . . . ¶ Squirrel Hill developer Thomas Watkins began building his real estate empire after purchasing a large tract of land in 1920 from the Mellon family. ¶ 'To him, the land appeared to be the ideal location for an urban residential community of grand proportions, where one could reside, go to market, and enjoy entertainment facilities,' wrote former Clayton curator Joanne B. Moore in 1986 in an article on Watkins in the Historical Society of Western Pennsylvania's magazine."
