Notes:East Woodland Road

From Pittsburgh Streets

Early newspaper references to "East Woodland Road" appear to refer to the portion of Woodland Road south of its intersection with West Woodland Road (to contrast it with West Woodland Road). For example, "Woodland road residence and grounds sold for an estate," Pittsburgh Post, 1925-02-28, p. 15 (Newspapers.com 88679799): "The Schoen residence and about 200 × 220 feet of land on East Woodland road, Fourteenth ward, is reported sold by brokers to Mrs. Gertrude Wood Lawson, for about $100,000. The house is of stone construction, and is to be the home of the purchaser. Only a portion of the land owned by the estate was conveyed, the frontage on Shady avenue being retained. ¶ The property adjoins the homes of G. M. Laughlin, Jr., and A. Curry. It is across East Woodland road from the residences of W. U. Follansbee and G. W. Crawford." Source:Hopkins-1923-2, plate 15, shows that this was the southern part of modern Woodland Road.

1965-02-22: "Reader's Digest editors win freedom award," Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, p. 6 (Newspapers.com 89903172): "Admiral Ben F. Moreell, former chairman of the board of Jones & Laughlin Steel Corp., 96 East Woodland Road, Shadyside, honor medal award for public address, 'Our Destination—Bondage or Freedom?'"

The house number here demonstrates that this is East Woodland Road in the modern sense. Consequently, we have a mention from 1961-10-02: "HILLTOP GARDEN CLUB will meet tomorrow at the home of Mrs. Ben Moreell on East Woodland Road" (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, p. 18, Newspapers.com 88643925).

1995-12-24: Donald Miller, "His blueprints are all over the 'Burgh," Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, pp. G-5, G-7 (Newspapers.com 89752686, 89752693): "On a grander scale, the architect supervised construction of the Frank–Anderson–Morell house, East Woodland Road, a 1939 modern house by Bauhaus architects Walter Gropius and Marcel Breuer."

This implies that references to Robert J. Frank (and Harry Anderson) on East Woodland Road also refer to the modern road.

1941-09-04: "Family returns," Pittsburgh Press, p. 19 (Newspapers.com 147343592): "Mr. and Mrs. Robert J. Franks [sic], with their daughters, Barbara Ann and Joan Betty, and their son, Alan Frank, will return to their home on East Woodland Road, on Friday, from a month's vacation touring the Canadian Rockies."
