McKee Place

From Pittsburgh Streets
McKee Place
Neighborhood Central Oakland
Origin of name Samuel McKee

McKee Place runs through the center of what was once the land of Samuel McKee.[1][2] The street was dedicated in 1885[3] and was authorized to be opened in 1890.[4] It appears that the residents of the street became impatient waiting for the city to grade, pave, and curb the street and install a sewer, so they did it themselves, and the city accepted the improved street and declared it to be a "public highway" in 1894.[5]

The 1889 Hopkins atlas labels it McKee Street,[6] but this seems to be an error.

The portion of Ward Street south of Zulema Street was made part of McKee Place by a city ordinance in 1889,[7] but this was reversed three years later.[8]
