This alley was laid out in 1878 in a plan of lots by the Linden Land Company, though that plan did not give it a name.[1] It was named Bombay Alley by a city ordinance in 1881.[2]

The history of the name becomes a little unclear in the early years of the 20th century.

In 1905, the Diulius brothers (Nicholas, Frank, Guy, and Felix) subdivided several lots in the Linden Land Company plan near Bombay Alley. The alley appeared in their plan, but it was not named.[3] The name of the alley seems to have changed from Bombay Alley to Diulius Alley about this time: the last reference to "Bombay Alley" that I can find is a mention in the minutes of Common Council from January 30, 1905,[4] and the name "Diulius Alley" was in use by 1909.[5]

In 1910, a city ordinance that established the names of all thoroughfares in Pittsburgh listed "Diulius, from Dawson to Boundary, 4th wd.," and declared that "all names not otherwise designated in this Ordinance shall be and the same are hereby fixed as 'streets.'" Bombay Alley was not listed.[6] This seems to have formally named it Diulius Street (perhaps inadvertently).

All alleys in Pittsburgh were changed to ways in 1914,[7] so if it was named Bombay Alley or Diulius Alley before, then it was named Bombay Way or Diulius Way afterward.

In 1915, another ordinance officially renamed Bombay Way to Diulius Way.[8] Perhaps someone noticed the confusion surrounding this name and decided to set it straight.

Current street signs spell the name "Diulus" (missing the second I).
