Darlington Road

From Pittsburgh Streets
Darlington Road
Neighborhood Squirrel Hill South
Bryson Street (until 1900)
Origin of name David Bryson Murdoch

This street was originally named Bryson Street. In 1886, a city ordinance established the location of the street, running from Wightman Street all the way to Joncaire Street through what soon became Schenley Park.[1] Four years later, the part between Joncaire Street and the east line of Schenley Park was repealed.[2] The street was opened in 1893.[3] Bryson Street appears in the 1898 Hopkins atlas.[4]

Bryson Street was likely named for David Bryson Murdoch (ca. 1847 – 1899), whose house stood near the modern intersection of Wightman Street and Darlington Road.[5][6]

The name was changed to Darlington Road in 1900, in response to a petition presented in Common Council on September 24.[7][8]

Bob Regan says that Darlington Road is named for Harry Darlington, "an industrial magnate who grew wealthy through beer brewing, steel, railroads, gas and coal investments."[9] Another source says it is named for Benjamin Darlington.[10]
