Origin of name The volt, the unit of electric potential

Steele Court was originally named Volt Alley. It, along with nearby Ampere Street and Electric Street, was laid out by Thomas S. Blair (1825–1898) in the 1890s.[1][2][3] Volt Alley was named for the volt, the unit of electric potential, which in turn is named for the Italian physicist and chemist Alessandro Volta (1745–1827), who invented the electric battery in 1800. See Electric Street for more about Blair and his interest in science and engineering.

Volt Alley became Volt Way in 1914, when a city ordinance changed all alleys to ways.[4] It was renamed Steele Court in 1955.[5]
