17th Street
Neighborhood Strip District
Origin of name Sequential numbering up the Allegheny River
Harrison Street (until 1868)
Origin of name Maybe William Henry Harrison

The original name of 17th Street was Harrison Street. Bruce S. Cridlebaugh suggests that it may have been named for William Henry Harrison (1773–1841), an active politician at the time Bayardstown was formed.[1]

In 1868, Pittsburgh's modern sequence of numbered streets was created by renaming all the streets perpendicular to the Allegheny River; Harrison Street became 17th Street.[1][2][3]
