Monitor Street is named for the ironclad USS Monitor, which fought the CSS Virginia in the Battle of Hampton Roads in the American Civil War, the first engagement between ironclad warships. The Virginia was commonly known as the Merrimack, the name of the frigate on whose hull the Virginia was built and the eponym of Merrimac Street.[1]
Monitor Street intersects Beechwood Boulevard three times,[2][3] a feat unmatched by any other pair of streets in Pittsburgh, as far as I know.
