Merrimac Street is named for the USS Merrimack, famous for being the hull upon which the Confederate ironclad CSS Virginia was built during the American Civil War. The Virginia went on to fight the USS Monitor (eponym of Monitor Street) in the Battle of Hampton Roads, the first engagement between ironclad warships.[1][2]
