The original name of 20th Street was Carson Street. In 1868, Pittsburgh's modern sequence of numbered streets was created by renaming all the streets perpendicular to the Allegheny River; Carson Street became 20th Street.[1][2][3]
Today Carson Street is the name of the main thoroughfare of the South Side, running along the south shores of the Monongahela and Ohio Rivers.
