This street appears as Hill Street in the 1852 map of R. E. McGowin.[1] After the annexation of the South Side into the city of Pittsburgh, the name conflicted with Hill Street (later Horace Street) joining downtown to the Bluff, so it was renamed Hartford Street.[2] Bob Regan includes "Hartford" in a list of streets named for cities.[3]
