This road appears in maps of Allegheny County from 1851 and 1862.[1][2] The 1876 Hopkins atlas shows several members of the McNeilly family living along this road in the northeast corner of Scott Township: Joseph McNeilly, Andrew McNeilly, and R. McNeilly.[3]

The road, or at least the segment forming part of the southwest boundary of Pittsburgh, was called McNeilly Avenue by 1908, when it was mentioned in a plan to redraw the ward boundaries of the city.[4] Its name was changed to McConnell Avenue in 1909,[5] but it was changed back to McNeilly Avenue in 1925.[6]

Much of the southern tip of Brookline was annexed to the city of Pittsburgh in 1912.[7][8][9] Part of the new southern city line was formed by the township road (modern McNeilly Avenue).[7][10] It was considered an unnamed street, and was given the name Heigle Street that year,[11][10] taking the name of John Heigle, Sr., who owned the land across the road from the city.[7][10] It was renamed McNeilly Avenue in 1925.[6]
