This alley appears as Cherry Alley in the 1896 Hopkins atlas.[1] It was renamed Calcutta Alley in 1905.[2] It became Calcutta Way in 1914 when an ordinance changed all alleys in the city to ways.[3]

Bob Regan includes "Calcutta" in a list of streets named for cities.[4]
